 Program Overview  study in america

The Department of Civil Engineering offers graduate programs leading to master of science (MSc), master of engineering (MEng) and doctor of philosophy (PhD) degrees in environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, theoretical and applied mechanics, transportation engineering and water resources.
   Research in civil engineering emphasizes the application of advanced technologies and computer-aided modeling, and sustainable development. Research in structures and mechanics focuses on fibre-reinforced composite materials and structural health monitoring. Geotechnical engineering research emphasizes contaminant transport, constitutive behaviours of geomaterials and tunnelling fracture of rocks. Environmental engineering research focuses on bioremediation, hog manure, municipal and industrial waste, composting and sustainable development. Hydraulic and hydrologic modeling and frazil ice are the main areas of water resources engineering research. Transportation engineering research emphasizes pavement design and management, truck size and weight regulations and GIS-based traffic information systems.
   Applicants to the MSc program must hold a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from a recognized university and meet the general admission standards for graduate study. In addition to completing a minimum of 18 credit hours of coursework, candidates must complete a thesis, deliver an oral presentation on that thesis and pass an oral examination. Students are required to spend at least one academic session in full-time resident graduate study and can expect to complete the program in two years.
   The MEng program is designed for practising engineers who wish to pursue industrially oriented and broad-based studies in the discipline. Applicants should have at least one or two years of engineering experience and must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours in order to earn the MEng. Candidates can choose one of two options: coursework alone or coursework plus a project and report. Those choosing the coursework alone option must pass a comprehensive examination. Students choosing the second option complete a project and report and deliver an oral presentation on the project as well as completing required coursework. The program generally takes two years to complete.
   Admission to the PhD program is normally from the MSc degree. Students making exceptional progress in the graduate programs may be transferred to the PhD by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) upon the recommendation of the Department Head. The PhD program consists of coursework, original research and thesis, with a minimum time requirement of two years of full-time study and research. The expected time to graduation is four years. Candidates with research projects located off-campus must be geographically proximate to the campus and visit it regularly.


 Admissions  study in america

The minimum standard for acceptance to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) is a bachelor's degree with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or equivalent in the last two years of full-time study. Admission to the MSc program in civil engineering requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or equivalent from a recognized university. Applicants to the MEng program must meet the general requirements for admission to the FGS. Admission to the PhD program is normally from the master's degree level. Interested students are advised to contact professors who are in their research area of interest to check for available positions. Upon successful contact, applicants must submit a completed application form, a nonrefundable application fee, official transcripts and a complete academic record to the department.

 Building and Facilities  study in america

The Department of Civil Engineering maintains research facilities that support each of the six specializations.
   Environmental engineering laboratories provide opportunities to study the physico- chemical and biological transformation of pollutants in water, wastewater and solid waste. Analytical equipment includes high- performance liquid chromatographs with a variety of detectors, gas chromatographs, automated ion analyzers, an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, carbon analyzer and microbial toxicity analyzer.
   Geotechnical laboratory equipment reflects the research interests of department staff in the engineering behaviour of naturally occurring materials. Standard consolidation, direct shear and triaxial shear test facilities are complemented by specialized facilities for the study of swelling clays, granular soils and hard crystalline rocks.
   Research facilities for structural engineering include concrete, structural and materials laboratories, as well as a structural engineering and construction research and development facility, which is equipped with a 23-ton overhead crane and 1.2 million-pound-capacity MTS servo-controlled loading system.
   The Hydraulics Research and Testing Facility includes a constant-head tank, variable-slope flumes and a random-wave flume. Floor space is available for hydraulic model studies. A counter-rotating flume is used to study ice processes.


 Expenses and Financial Support  study in america

University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships are available through competition in February of each year with current annual funding levels of $12,000 for master's and $16,500 for doctoral students. Competitive fellowships are also available from the Natural Sciences Engineering Research Council and Medical Research Council to applicants who are citizens or permanent residents of Canada. A number of scholarships are available to offset part of the cost of tuition fees. Research and teaching assistantships may also be available for selected candidates. The International Centre for Students (ICS) offers services and programs to help international students get the most out of their time at UM. International student services include pre- and postarrival guides available on the ICS website, orientation, assistance with immigration and accommodation issues, and campus buddy and host family programs. The Volunteer English Partner program and Living In Canada workshops assist international students with making the adjustment to living and studying in Canada. The International Student Adviser is available to help with any difficulties international students might have at the university or with immigration concerns. The ICS also sponsors activities and a student lounge.
