| Program Overview |
|
The Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) has a 128-year history of excellence in training both military and civilian leaders. RMC is unique as a federally funded institution of higher learning whose principal function is to teach and train officers of the Canadian military. Civilians who wish to pursue graduate studies at RMC can do so without joining the military. RMC is fully bilingual. Undergraduate students can take their courses in either official language. Graduate courses may be offered in English or French, and the thesis may be written in either official language.
The department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers master of science (MSc) and doctor of philosophy (PhD) degrees, with specialty fields of Mathematics and Computer Science. The MSc normally comprises six one- term courses and a thesis. The PhD normally requires 10 one-term courses beyond the baccalaureate level, usually four one-term courses beyond the master's level, and a thesis. The thesis consists of a research project intended to extend the student's knowledge in a field, develop independent inquiry, and gain experience in writing a definitive treatise. At the PhD level the thesis should also represent an addition to the existing body of knowledge in the field of study.
The master's program takes two years, on average, including the summer period, with at least 12 months of full-time study, which comprise the residence period. Normally about three years are required to complete the PhD beyond the master's level with at least 24 months of full-time study, which comprise the residence period.

| Admissions |
|
For direct admission to the master's programs in mathematics and computer science, applicants must hold an honours degree from a recognized university with at least “Second Class” standing (70 per cent) in the field in which graduate studies and research are to be pursued.
The normal admission requirements for a PhD student include a master's degree by thesis or equivalent by thesis, in a field closely related to the proposed field of study. Candidates may also be considered for admission who have completed one academic year of full-time graduate study in a field closely related to the proposed field of study. In either case, only candidates who are considered to have a high potential for research competence will be accepted.
Additional requirements may be imposed and even though the applicant may appear to satisfy the general admission requirements, acceptance into a graduate degree program is not guaranteed. | Building and Facilities |
|
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is in the Girouard building. Many fully equipped computer lab and classrooms are available to support graduate studies and research. The university's central computing centre is also in the Girouard Building. The Science and Engineering Library is conveniently housed in the Massey Building.

| Expenses and Financial Support |
|
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science attempts to provide financial support to most civilian students in the thesis programs. Civilian students who secured outside support via NSERC or other scholarships are provided with top-up funds.
|
|
| International Students |
|
International students, whether military personnel or civilian, are admitted to RMC programs only when covered by agreement between their government and the Government of Canada through the Department of National Defense.
|
